To start trading with other players, you must first progress through the early stages of the main story. Trading features become available once you reach Oreburgh City and defeat the local Gym Leader, Roark. After earning your first Gym Badge, returning to any Pokémon Center unlocks access to the Union Rooms located on the upper and lower floors.
The Local Room on the upper floor allows you to connect with players who are physically nearby using local wireless communication. The Global Room on the lower floor enables online trading with players across the world, provided you have an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Speaking to the attendants behind the counters will allow you to enter either room and initiate a trade session.
Using Link Codes for Online Trading
Trading with specific friends online requires using the Link Code feature within the Global Room. When entering the Global Room, select the option to join using a Link Code and enter an agreed-upon eight-digit number. Both players must enter the exact same code to enter the same virtual room instance.
Once inside the room, approach the other player's avatar and press the interaction button to offer a trade request. After both players agree to trade, a dedicated menu displays your party and PC boxes. Selecting a Pokémon allows you to inspect its stats before confirming the exchange, ensuring a fair and transparent trade.
Global Wonder Station and Union Room Shortcuts
As you venture further into the Sinnoh region, additional convenient trading options become accessible. Reaching Jubilife City grants access to the Global Wonder Station, which allows for random Wonder Trades with players worldwide. This feature is excellent for obtaining surprising Pokémon and filling out Pokédex entries effortlessly.
Additionally, once you unlock the Global Room, you can access it directly from anywhere outdoors by pressing the Y button on your controller. This handy shortcut eliminates the need to visit a Pokémon Center every time you want to connect online.
